About the Competition

canadianCUBING and the Calgary Cubing Club are pleased to announce the Calgary Limited, Fall 2016 speedcubing competition. The competition will be held on Saturday, November 26, 2016, at SAIT, which is located at 1301 16 Ave NW, Calgary, AB T2M 0L4.

Registration will be in MacDonald Hall and the competition will be held in the Irene Lewis Atrium, which is located between M and A on the map. We recommend you park in Lot P6 which you can access from 10th Street NW. You will enter the building marked “Heritage Hall” – A on the map. MacDonald Hall is a few steps once you enter the building.

This is an official WCA event, and as such all official regulations will be followed. Please take some time to read them over before the day of the competition, especially if you have never competed before.

Registration

Click here to access the registration form. Registration for the competition will close on Monday, November 21, 2016. So be sure to register online to take advantage of the early bird pricing. 

If we do not hit the cap of 210 competitors, we will accept registrations at the door until we fill to this number. See the Cost section for details.

Costs

The cost to competitors that register online before the close date will be our standard pricing model. You will pay $15.00 to compete in one event. Each additional event will cost $2.00 to a maximum of $25.00.

If we do not hit the cap of 210 competitors before the close of the registration period, we will accept registrations on the morning of the competition. The price at that time, however, is $30.00 for the first event, $3.00 per additional event with no maximum fee. 

Since this is a Limited competition, you must pay your fee online before your registration is completed. Only those that have completed their registration are able to compete in the competition. When you start your registration process using the online form, you will receive an email with further instructions on how to complete your registration. Make sure you supply the correct email address for this purpose.

Important Notes:

  • All sales are final. Should you pay online and find you cannot attend later, we will not issue a refund. This policy is to prevent "squatting", where someone reserves a limited spot without the full intention of attending.
  • If you decide to drop an event, you will not be reimbursed the fee for the event.
  • You cannot add events the morning of the competition. Your registration fee is final once you pay.
  • We will not be accepting walk-on registrations the morning of the competition unless our cap has not been met. You must register online in order to participate.

Cost for spectators at the competition is free of charge. So please come out and watch some of the fastest speedcubers in the country compete.

Prizes

The top three placements will be recognized for their achievements, including certificates.

Cubing Out Loud will provide $30 discount codes to all first place winners for use at their online store.

Schedule

We will release the schedule after registration closes so we know how many people are in each event. 

Merchandise

Cubing Out Loud, the official sponsor of the competition, will be on site selling puzzles, shirts, lube, timers, and more. They accept both cash and credit cards.  However, since this is an out-of-province event for them, the supply will be quite limited. Your best bet is to use the Pick Up option to ensure you can get anything they have in their catalog (see below).

Cubing Out Loud is offering a pick-up option for your merch needs. Simply select the CLS2016 shipping method at checkout on their website to indicate you will be picking up your order at the competition, and they'll waive the shipping fee. Using this approach will ensure you get the items you want. No waiting in lines, either. There will be a separate area to pick up your order when you arrive in the morning. This is the best option for merch!

Food

The food court in the building will be open during most of the competition. There are also other food venues within SAIT campus as well as the close surrounding area.

Parking

There is a flat rate charge of $7.00 / day for parking on Saturday.

Accommodations

There are accommodations available in limited supply at SAIT. They have two bedroom rooms that come with a kitchen, as well as a penthouse suite.  Here is the link to accommodations available at SAIT. The rates are great and include breakfast, wifi and a parking pass.

Volunteers

We are always looking for dedicated people to donate their time and efforts to these competitions. We need scramblers and judges for every round of every event. It is a great opportunity for parents, siblings, friends, or anyone that wants to come and be involved but does not want to compete yet. We will provide training the morning of the competition for those wishing to help out. It is not difficult, so don't be afraid!

For anyone that volunteers and helps out for an entire competition, we will act as a reference if you wish to put this on your resume or college application. We will also sign any high school volunteer hour sheets provided you work the entire competition. But you must arrange this with us before the competition. Contact us here if you plan to help out.
