About the Competition
canadianCUBING is pleased to announce Canada's official national competition, the Canadian Open 2009. The competition will be held at the Ontario Science Centre on September 19th and 20th 2009. The OSC is located at 770 Don Mills, Toronto Ontario Canada. The competition will be held in the auditorium again at the OSC, which will be familiar for those that were at the Canadian Open 2007, or even the World Championships 2003.
This is an official WCA event, and as such all official regulations will be followed. Please take some time to read the regulations over before the day of the competition, especially if you have never competed before.
Events
There will be a total of 12 events available over the two days. We will use a combined average approach for many events. This approach means that you will receive 2 solves for events with an Average of 5 format to achieve a time under the stated cutoff time. If you succeed, you will be permitted to finish the average. For the Mean of 3 events, you will be allowed one solve to get under the cut off time.
Main Events
  • 2x2x2 – Average of 5 | 2 rounds (Top 10)
  • 3x3x3 – Average of 5 | 3 rounds (Top 25, Top 10)
  • 3x3x3 One Handed – Average of 5 | 60 second cut off | 2 rounds (Top 10)
  • 3x3x3 Blindfolded – Best of 3 | 4 minute cut off
  • 4x4x4 – Average of 5 | 90 second cut off | 2 rounds (Top 6)
  • 5x5x5 – Average of 5 | 2:30 cut off | 2 rounds (Top 6)
Side Events
  • Magic – Average of 5
  • Megaminx – Mean of 3 | 3 minute cut off
  • Pyraminx – Average of 5
  • Square-1 – Average of 5 | 3 minute cut off
  • 6x6x6 – Mean of 3 | 6 minute cut off
  • 7x7x7 – Mean of 3 | 8 minute cut off

The competition has a total of nearly $3000 in cash prizes to be won. Winners must be present at the awards ceremony to be eligible to win. The prizes break down as follows:

All funds listed are, of course, in Canadian money, and will be paid to the winners in cash at the awards ceremony. Any registered cuber of any nationality is eligible for all prizes.
Gift Packs
The first 80 competitors that registered online before the competition will receive a complementary gift pack. The contents of the pack will be kept secret until the competition weekend, but there will be a lot of goodies inside that will be sure to please even the modest cuber.
If all 80 gift packs are not accounted for after registration closes, we will hold a raffle for any competitors that did not receive a pack at the reception on Saturday. If we get more than 80 online registrations, the precedence will be by the date and time registered. So don't camp out at the venue or reception as it won't help in you to getting a gift pack.
Reception / After Party
We will have a reception at the hotel (indicated in the Accommodations section), the Best Western, Roehampton Hotel & Suites, which is located at 808 Mount Pleasant Road Toronto, Ontario, Canada, M4P 2L2. The reception is open for all cubers and their guests on both the Friday and Saturday night, from 5:30PM to 11PM. It will be held in the Eglinton Room, which is located on the second floor, just left of the elevators.
On the Friday night, we will open registration for those who wish to check in early and receive their gift packs. This will enable you to skip the process on the Saturday morning. We will have some snacks available on the Friday night for those that are present.
On the Saturday night, we will have food for dinner for the competitors and guests. We will also use the opportunity on Saturday to have some fun mystery events at certain points in the evening, so be sure to come to participate.
We will also offer a merchandise counter at the reception on both nights so you can get your cubing supplies then, as we will not have a merchandise table set up at the competition itself.
Costs
There is a flat fee of $25 for each competitor that registers online and includes all events in which he or she wishes to compete, the gift pack, admission to the Ontario Science Centre for both days plus two guests, and access to the reception party on both the Friday and Saturday nights. If you did not register online, the cost is $30 for the same features.
There is free parking atthe Ontario Science Centre each day, just mention you are there for the competition to the attendant. The officially designated hotel is within walking distance to the venue. There is a small fee to park at the hotel.
Schedule
To download the schedule in PDF format, click here. We will have the finals for the main events on the second day. If someone that made the final does not show up to compete on the second day, the next eligible cuber that is present at the finals will be admitted instead.
Accommodations
The official hotel for the competition is the Best Western, Roehampton Hotel & Suites, which is located at 808 Mount Pleasant Road Toronto, Ontario, Canada, M4P 2L2.
We have arranged for all guests to have access to a special discounted rate for the competition weekend. The rate is $119+ tax per night for a standard room, there are also suites available for $20 more. You must, however, book the room by August 18th, 2009 to get the discounted rate. After that time, you can still book a room at the hotel should there be availability, but at the regular rate of about $140 per night.
We encourage everyone to book a room for the weekend, even if you live just outside Toronto, to maximize the fun with everyone staying at the same place. This location is also where the receptions will be held, making it an even more convenient choice. The hotel is about a 10 minute drive to the Ontario Science Centre. Additionally, there are bus routes to commute from the hotel to the venue.
To book a reservation, call 1-800-387-8899 and use the group booking code of CANADIANCUBING to get the discounted rate. The rate is not available through the internet or Best Western Central Reservations. So be sure to call the right number.
Registration
Registration will open on July 20th, 2009 and will remain open until September 15th, 2009. Please be sure to register before that date. Remember, when you register you will receive an email. In the email is a link to allow you to edit your registration, including events, up to the close date of the registration. If you wish to change something, do not register again. Simply use the link provided in the email. Click here to complete your registration.
Merchandise
We will not be able to sell merchandise at the competition itself due to contractual obligations with the Ontario Science Centre. We will, however, have a booth set up at the reception area on both the Friday and Saturday nights for your convenience. We will post an up to date merchandise list sometime in September with prices.
Volunteers
canadianCUBING will need dedicated and reliable volunteers to help make this event run smoothly and on time. We are looking for people to donate their time for both days, the Saturday and Sunday. These positions are ideal for family and friends of the competitors. If you would like to volunteer to help, please contact us. All volunteers will receive a complementary volunteer gift on behalf of canadianCUBING.
If you did not make the finals and have no events to compete in on the second day, we would appreciate it if you could come anyway and help scramble or judge on the second day. Please indicate to us ahead of time so we can plan accordingly.
For anyone that volunteers and helps out for an entire competition, we will act as a reference if you wish to put this on your resume or college application. We will also sign any high school volunteer hour sheets provided you work the entire competition. But you must arrange this with us before the competition. Use the contact form .
Sponsors
A competition of this size and magnitude would not be possible without the generous contributions from several companies and organizations. The competition is made possible by the following sponsors:
If you would like to be a sponsor, please contact us to discuss ways in which you can help make this an exciting event for everyone.
