Niagara Competition Concludes Dave Campbell , August 24, 2008 |
Yesterday, canadianCUBING held its 6th competition, this time in Niagara Falls, Ontario. Over 40 competitors descended on the city to compete in 13 different events. Several National Records were broken by Jack Moseley, Eric Limeback, Harris Chan and Ibrahim Vajgel-Shedid. Rowe Hessler – up from the USA for his second Canadian competition – set a North American Record in the blindfolded event with the first sub 60 second solve by an American or Canadian.
Winning the 3x3x3 event was Harris Chan with an average in the finals of 11.79 seconds. In second was Eric Limeback at 14.00, and finishing in third was Jason Thong with an average of 14.21 seconds. The full results have been sent to the WCA and will most likely be posted today. As usual, I want to take this opportunity to personally thank all our volunteers for their selfless contributions to the competition. Thank you to the Moseley family, the Mativo family, the Westermann family for their role in the organization and execution of the competition. And a special thank you to Simba Mai, Sam Boyles, and Andrej Karpathy for scrambling and judging when no one else would. We will have a report on the competition in the coming weeks. If anyone has pictures, please send them to us as we didn’t get the chance to take any. |

Jack Moseley Sets National Records Dave Campbell , July 21, 2008 |
The past weekend, our own Jack Moseley traveled to Atlanta to participate in the US Open. Jack faired quite well against the fastest in the US. He also set several National Records. Jack set records for Square-1, single and average; Pyraminx, single and average; Fewest Moves (winning the event); 5x5 single and average; and 4x4 single. To see the complete results of the competition, click here.
On behalf of canadianCUBING, and all of our community members, we wish to congratulation Jack for his performance. You have represented us very well. Thank you. |
Competition Drought Dave Campbell , July 11, 2008 |
Just a quick update to draw attention to two new articles we have on the site. In chronological order, we have a post competition article for the Cincinnati Open which members of canadianCUBING attended, composed by a special guest author. We also have the post competition article for the Vancouver Open 2008, and picture collection for it.
canadianCUBING would also like to wish Jack Moseley good luck as he travels to Atlanta this weekend to compete in the US National competition. He will be representing all of Canada. We are all cheering for you, Jack. Do your best, and have a lot of fun.
We hope everyone is enjoying the summer, and using your free time wisely. For example, you could be cubing right now. Check back here by the end of the month to see the information for the next southern Ontario competition.

Vancouver Competition Results Dave Campbell , June 14, 2008 | The first ever Canadian competition held outside of Ontario happened today, June 14th, 2008 in Vancouver, British Columbia. We had a total of 23 competitors, but everyone had a great time. Ibrahim Vajgel-Shedid won the competition with an average of 15.47 seconds. Kristopher de Asis finished in second place with an average of 18.14. And Deseree Aune became the fastest female cuber in Canada, finishing in third place with an average of 20.83 seconds.
The results have been submitted to the WCA and should be available on the site tomorrow. In the meantime, you can download a PDF version of the results here.
Thanks to all the competitors that showed up to make the competition a success, and to all the amazing volunteers that donated their time and efforts for the cause. A special thanks to Hong Chen for all his hard work to make the competition possible. We will have a full report sometime in the near future. |
Registration Closes and Pictures Emerge Dave Campbell , June 03, 2008 |
This update is to remind everyone that the registration for the Vancouver Open, Summer 2008 competition scheduled for June 14th will close tomorrow. We extended the registration a couple of days to accommodate late registrants. If you missed the registration, you can still compete. Please come early to the competition the morning of the 14th to register at that time. We will post the schedule of events next week, so check the information page next week to see it, but expect to be there by 9 AM.
We also uploaded the pictures from C3 to facebook. If you do not have facebook, or are not friends with someone to see them, you can view the album here. Additionally, you can see all the pictures from the Toronto Open, Fall 2007 and Canadian Open 2007 here, and here ( 1, 2, 3) respectively. These links are also available under the appropriate sections on the Events page. That is it until after the BC competition, as canadianCUBING leaves for Vancouver this Friday. We hope to see many new faces at the competition. Remember to use the forum to communicate with each other! |
canadianCUBING in Cincinnati Dave Campbell , June 03, 2008 |
This past weekend, members of canadianCUBING drove to Cincinnati to participate in the Cincinnati Spring Open competition. The team, as a whole, did quite well, taking home 11 of a possible 21 medals. Eric Limeback won the competition with an average time of 13.38 seconds in the final, moving him into second place as the country’s fastest cuber behind only Harris Chan. Jack Moseley finished in second place with an average of 16.14 seconds. To see the full results, click here.
Additionally, Eric also set a couple National Records. He was the first Canadian to successfully solve a 4x4 cube blindfolded in a time of 23 minutes and 49 seconds. He also broke the National Record in the 3x3 Blindfolded event with an extremely fast time of 1:22.22 seconds. To add to his already impressive performance, he tied the previous World Record time of 9.55 seconds for the 3x3 single solve. This puts two Canadians in the top four places for single solves. To see the solve, and hear Bill Li’s classic commentary, click here. Fellow canadianCUBING team member Emile Compion, representing South Africa, also set many African records that day, most notably in the 5x5 event, in which he averaged 2:08.29 seconds, putting him in the top 30 in the world. All in all, everyone seemed to have a good weekend. We would like to extend our gratitude to Jim Mertens and his entire family for giving us a place to stay, free of charge, for the weekend. Congratulations to the team. As usual, we will have a full report on the entire weekend in the coming weeks. |
Hong Chen Repeats in the Metro Dave Campbell , May 21, 2008 |
Just like last year's Canadian Open, Hong Chen has been featured in the Vancouver's Metro daily newspaper. To see the article, click here. Hong and fellow BC cuber Vince Yim have also constructed a nice poster/handout for the Vancouver Open. If you live in BC, please download the file, print it out and post it wherever possible. To download the article, click here.
This is just a reminder that the registration for the Vancouver Open closes on June 3rd. If you are considering coming out but afraid you are not good enough, that is no excuse. You don't have to be competing for first place to come out and compete. All are encouraged to attend. It is a great chance to meet other cubers and learn a lot of things about cubing. You are sure to leave a faster cuber than when you arrived
|
canadianCUBING Goes Costal Dave Campbell , April 30, 2008 |
The rumours of a speedcubing competition in BC have finally come to a reality. We are pleased to announce the Vancouver Open, Summer 2008 competition. It will be held on Saturday June 14th in Vancouver. Registration opens at midnight tonight. To see all the details, click here.
Be sure to tell all your cubing friends, we want to see a great turn out for the first competition. It will help ensure we hold more there! I am looking forward to meeting all the BC cubers. Hopefully some American cubers will realize how easy it is to get up to Vancouver and come out, as well. It is only a couple hours from Seattle. See you soon! |
canadianCUBING Classic Completed (C4) Dave Campbell , April 20, 2008 |
The canadianCUBING Classic was held yesterday at the Ontario Science Centre in Toronto. The event was a great success, with many amazing times set, personal records, National and North American records broken, as well. I have submitted the official results to the WCA, but I believe Ron is in Germany so I am not sure when they will be posted. You will be able to find them here when they are up. As usual, many thanks go to all the volunteers that donated all their time and efforts to making this competition run smoothly. We had a lot of competitors this time, and we were not too far off the schedule after all was said and done. Special thanks to the Moseley family, the Chan family, the Walter family, the Mativo family, the Ontario Science Centre, and Jai Gambhir for single handedly scrambling about half of all the cubes that day, he was a machine. We had some media attention yesterday, to see a brief video of the event by the Toronto Sun, click here. We are also collecting videos, click here to see our current collection. Send us links to your youtube videos! Discuss the competition here. I will do a full report again in the coming weeks; we took pictures this time so I have to wade through them. Congratulations to all the winners, and to everyone that came out to make this competition a memorable event. Keep practicing, and keep checking this site to see when the next competition will be held. But don't be surprised if we have another one this summer. |
One Week to C Cubed Dave Campbell , April 12, 2008 |
We are one week away from the festivities at the Ontario Science Centre. There are two things to keep in mind. Monday is your last day for registration. It will close at 12AM Tuesday. This also includes your ability to edit your existing registrations, so be sure you have registered, and your registration is how you plan to compete next weekend.
Second, the WCA has released its new regulations and it includes some important changes. I encourage everyone that is going to compete, whether you have competed before or not, to read the new regulations. There are some changes that you will want to incorporate into your practice routine so there are no surprises the day of the competition. Find the new regulations here. Either Wednesday or Thursday I should have the tentative schedule of events up for the Classic. Check back then to see it. I hope everyone is practiced up and ready to have some fun. See you soon. |
TOW Post Competition Article Dave Campbell , March 30, 2008 |
Finally, I have completed and uploaded the article on the Toronto Open, Winter 2008 competition. My apologies for the delay, but I had a lot of post competition items to take care of, add in the organization for C3 and the Vancouver Open, we have been busy around here. But thank you all for being patient and understanding. I hope the article was worth the wait. Click here to read the article.

Magically Delicious Dave Campbell , March 26, 2008 |
This update is to announce that we have decided to add the Magic event to the canadianCUBING Classic. My condition is that you must have your own magic to compete. In fact, this goes for all events. It takes too long to wait for someone else to finish the only puzzle available for an event. If you are competing in the event, you have to own your own puzzle. No exceptions. I am not trying to be a jerk, but why should everyone else suffer because you don't want to buy the equipment for an event you want to participate in? It is about fairness.
It is now available on the registration form. I also updated the form to allow registered competitors to update their registration. Any registrations from here on out will have the link to edit their registration in the confirmation email. I have sent some of you this link for your current registration already. If you did not receive this link, send me an email and I will send you the link so you can edit your registration. Please do not reregister.
Also, I added a channel for videos from the Princeton Open that many of our top cubers attended this month. To see the videos currently available, as well as read some reports from several of the cubers themselves, visit the media section and find the appropriate section.

C3 Registration & Princeton Dave Campbell , March 24, 2008 |
Just an update to bring attention to the Registration for the canadianCUBING Classic, which is now open and will run until 11:59 PM on April 14th, 2008. Be sure to register before then so you can get in for free!
Also, this past weekend, a group fellow Canadian speedcubers made the trip down to Princeton, USA to compete in the Princeton open. To see the full results, click here. canadianCUBING wishes to congratulate Raiza Mativo, Rhodri Mativo, Eric Limeback, Harris Chan, Doowon Joo and thank everyone involved in getting them there. The group did so well in many events. You represented us all, and we truly appreciate it. And special congratulations to Doowon for breaking the National Record for the 3x3x3 One Handed Single Solve. You deserve it. Though, now you have made my draft version of the TOW report outdated!
Speaking of the report, I apologize for the delay. It is next on my to do list to finalize and post. So hang in there. Thanks to everyone that keeps checking in, hopefully we can have some new things for you sooner than later.
Remember to use the Message Board instead of just the shoutbox! You have an account, no need to worry about clones.

Toronto Open, Extreme Winter Edition Dave Campbell , March 9, 2008 |
A total of 55 brave cubers made the trek through horrible weather conditions yesterday to attend the second installment of the Toronto Open series. There were many bumps along the way that were part of the ripple effect of the winter storm, but in the end, the competition was successful. Expect a full report in the next 10 days. For now, you can check out the official resuts here.
Thank you to everyone that made it out to ensure the competition could go on. And a very, very special thank you to all the volunteers, without whom the competition would not have been possible. Thank you to the Moseley family, Mativo family, Compion family, Bill Li, and the rest of the cubers that jumped in to help scramble or judge as the day went on.
And a very special thank you goes to Ryosuke Mondo for flying all the way from Japan for our humble competition, and for thrilling us all with his absolutely incredible blindfolding abilities. To be able to see that live was a treat for us all.
We were so busy that we didn't get a chance to take pictures of anything. If you have photos of the event and would be willing to share, please send it to support [at] this domain (canadianCUBING.com).

TOW Schedule Released Dave Campbell , March 4, 2008 |
The tentative schedule of events for Saturday's competition is not posted. See the "schedule" section of the event information page.

Multiple Blindfolded Solving @ TOW Dave Campbell , February 7, 2008 |
We've decided to allow Multiple Blindfolded Solving at the upcoming Toronto Open, Winter 2008 competition. If you are interested in competing in this event, please contact us after you have registered letting us know you would like to make the attempt and how many cubes it will be. Please keep in mind there is a time limit based on how many cubes you will attempt; please see the associated section of the Official WCA Regulations to ensure you can comply.
I am going to set down some guidelines here in regards to what I expect out of anyone wishing to compete in this event. Please only tell us you are going to compete in the event if you are certain you will be coming to the competition and that you will follow through with the event. I say this because it takes some planning to get everything in place for this event, such as arranging space, purchasing a dedicated stop watch so we are not short at the timing stations, allocating a judge, working the time into the schedule, etc. And I don't want to do this if you are not serious about it. You must also supply your own cubes for this, obviously. Frankly, if you don't have enough cubes to do the attempt, you have not tried it yourself previously. Don't try it for the first time at the competition, please. If you feel you meet these requirements, contact us and let us know as soon as possible. Only those who have let us know before the competition will be allowed to make the attempt. |
The Daniel Beyer Interview Dave Campbell , February 4, 2008 |
When members of canadianCUBING attended the Cornell Spring 2007 speedcubing competition on March 31, 2007, we sat down with Daniel Beyer, a prominent American-born bigcube blindfold cuber, for an interview. We recorded the interview and Daniel was kind enough to allow us to post it online. We later did another interview in which he recounted his story that he used to memorize the configuration of his 5x5 blindfolded solve. That portion of the interview lasted about 15 minutes, we hope to edit it and have a more manageable clip online sometime. But for now, if you are interested in seeing the discussion portion of the interview, click here.
Many thanks to Daniel for his cooperation and support of canadianCUBING. |
Toronto Open, Winter 2008 Dave Campbell , February 3, 2008 |

New Feature Online Dave Campbell , January 25, 2008 |
Late last year, canadianCUBING conducted an interview with the winner of the Toronto Open, Fall 2007 speedcubing competition to discuss his performance at the competition, his approach to cubing, and his opinions on some relevant issues facing the cubing community today. To read the complete article, click here.

Forum Problems Dave Campbell , January 20, 2008 |

Hey look, it is the first update of 2008. I hope everyone had a good holiday season. As most of you know, we have had an issue with our Forum host, and lost its service as well as all of our history. Jai Gambhir was kind enough to do some research for us and found an attractive alternative that is hopefully more reliable than our last. I do wish to apologize to everyone for this, but it will require you to register for this board. Hopefully this will be the last switch we have to do. To access the new link, click on the Forum tab above. As always, your feedback is welcomed and encouraged.
I also want to let everyone know I am in the process of trying to work out the next competition for us all. We met with one company last month, and have a meeting with another company next weekend to discuss holding a competition. But if none of those seem attractive enough, we will just fall back on the same location we used the at the Toronto Open in November. So, basically, we will have a competition sometime in the coming months one way or another, so stay tuned into the community. You won't want to miss anything.

Toronto Open, Fall 2007 Article Dave Campbell , December 5, 2007 |
This is an update to draw attention to the article we have released about the Toronto Open. It is currently lacking in photos, so if anyone has some good photos, with a variety of people and events, that they are willing to donate to us, we would be appreciative. Email me at dave.campbell at this domain (canadiancubing.com) with them as an attachment.

Another Competition Comes and Goes Dave Campbell , November 24, 2007 |
The Toronto Open, Fall 2007 speedcubing competition has come to an end. Thank you to everyone that came out to participate, watch, and most importantly, volunteer their time and effort. It simply would not be possible without people donating their time for all of us cubers. A special thank you goes out to the Walter and Moseley families who were by my side, virtually all day. And thank you to the beautiful Merchandise girl, Simone.
I hope everyone had a good time, and I encourage you all to sign up for the forum, share your experiences, thoughts, constructive criticisms, etc. I will begin gathering all the information from everyone and compile it into coherent sections. So feel free to write your own report and post it on the forum. The best ones will be copied and pasted onto this site, with due credit, of course. So write well!

Opportunity Knocks Dave Campbell , August 16, 2007 |
Good day everyone. I apologize for the lack of activity on the website for the last while. This summer has been a busy one for myself, and I have been unable to devote enough time to creating things for the site. I hope to get back on schedule in the coming weeks. But we are not dead, the site is alive, and we will get back on track soon. And yes, it will include long overdue reports. I have also not forgotten about putting together a competition for the fall, so please stay tuned.
I mainly wanted to draw attention to an opportunity for speedcubers in the Toronto area. For full details, please visit the forum by clicking here. I hope everyone is well, and everyone's times are dropping rapidly. I look forward to seeing everyone later this year.

2007 US Open Videos The first batch Dave Campbell , July 11, 2007 |
The Dzoan family was nice enough to make all the videos from the final round of the 2007 US Open available online. We started a video collection of these, which can be found here. Currently we have all of Matt Walter's videos up, so check them out. For those that may not have heard, the format for the finals was unusual, and a throw back to 1982. Each of the 12 finalist did every one of their solves alone in front of the entire audience. I'd imagine that would have been rather stressful. Undoubtedly, it affected everyone's times, but some fast times were still hit.
We have a ton of videos still; in fact, from many different competitions – US Open, Canadian Open, Cornell Spring. We are having issues transferring them properly from DVD to mpeg / mpg / avi. If anyone knows of a good application to do so, we'd love to hear it. But I do still owe everyone a report. I will get on that.

Craig Gets Discovered Dave Campbell , June 27, 2007 |
Here is a link to the video of Craig Bouchard's appearance on The Discovery Channel that he recorded the week leading up to the Canadian Open 2007. I have seen these types of flash players more and more online lately, and I cannot ever get them to work in Firefox. So you may be forced to use IE for it. I'd love to have a better version of this at some point; but for now, for those that missed it, here is your chance to see it. I personally think Craig did an amazing job. Congratulations, Craig.
|
A Promise Kept Dave Campbell , June 26, 2007 |

As promised, we now have a Forum in place and ready to go to be used by all. Click here to access it, the link is also on the top menu for now. You will have to register, unfortunately. I know that can be a pain, but it is a pretty easy process and it will help to ensure we don't get a ton of spambots or imposters abound. The forum will work best if we all register and all contribute.
We will try and keep the forum a friendly place, and not so cutthroat like the yahoo board has gotten the last year. There are no stupid questions, so feel free to post whatever you like. Try and keep the topics sorted as best as possible according to the available categories we have up. And please remember, this is all of ours so if you have an idea or suggestion, let us know. Either via the board, or send us a private message through the usual means.
I'd like to thank Rob Secord for finding and setting the forum up for us. And while I am at it, I want to bring to everyone's attention that, though I usually do the news updates, I am not alone on this project. I have a lot of help for all things CanadianCUBING. And on that note, I will take the opportunity to thank the rest of the team: Matt Walter, Rob Secord, Karen Grace, and Amanda Green. They have all put in a lot of time and effort, free of charge, to make the competition and this site possible. Thanks, guys!

US Open 2007 Dave Campbell , June 19, 2007 |
Matt Walter, Jessica Walter and Dave Campbell traveled to Chicago this past weekend to compete in the 2007 US Open. Matt ended up winning the 5x5 event, setting a National Record for both single solve and average. Congratulations Matt!
We all had a lot of fun, and got to see some old friends, and make some new ones. We will have a full report sometime in the near future. We took a ton of pictures and videos that we will have to make available soon. We seem to say that a lot, yet have not gotten many videos up. I apologize, I will try to fix that soon.
For full results from the competition click here.
And a side note, I realize that we need a better means of communication than the Quick Connect. It is the only thing we have, so please continue to use it, but it was not designed to be used so heavily for communication. It is on the list of things to change or add to the site.
|
Another Great Video Dave Campbell , June 6, 2007 |
Emile Compion created a really cool video of various clips from the Canadian Open 2007. We added the video to our currently collection, but to see the video directly, click here.
Thanks to Emile for this video, and Rhodri for the videos of the TV appearances (sorry I forgot to mention that last time). If anyone has anymore videos coming, please drop us an email or use the Contact Us form to let us know. Our goal is to make all the media readily available.
I think we need another competition.
|
Videos of The Canadian Open 2007 Dave Campbell , May 30, 2007 |
There will be lots more videos from the day of the competition coming, but in the mean time, we have complied a short list of currently available videos. This list includes Chris Krueger's World Record blindfold solve. If you have not had a chance to see it, we strongly recommend you check it out. It is pretty incredible. You can see the list of videos here.
For completeness, here is an external link to another video that was done on the Friday before the competition. Though the only interesting part is Matt Walter's solve that is found at the end of the video. I am not sure the player works too well in Firefox, so you may want to try IE.

The Canadian Open 2007 The first National Competition comes to an end Dave Campbell , May 20, 2007 |

The Canadian Open 2007 was held yesterday. Congratulations to all the winners. The event was good, and everyone seemed to have a good time. We will have full reports in the near future, with multi media to show all that happened.
There were a few noteworthy items that happened. Chris Krueger, from the USA, who came up from California to give us a hand, set a World Record for Blindfold solving with an incredible time of 1:15.60. It was unbelievable, and we were all extremely happy to have him do it at the Canadian Open.
Craig Bouchard set a new National Record for the 2x2 event with an average of 8.75 seconds. Harris Chan finally dethroned Matt Walter as Canada's fastest cuber with an amazing average of 13.59 in the 3x3 event, which actually set the North American record as well.
There were a number of countries represented at the open, with many countries having their National Records set or broken. For the complete results of the competition, click here.
On behalf of CanadianCUBING, I would like to thank everyone that came out. It was a great success and it was nice to finally meet everyone. I am sorry I was so busy that I hardly had time to spend time with everyone. I feel like I missed a lot. I can't wait to see everyone again. Stay tuned to this site for much more to come in the near future.

The Harris Chan Buzz Continues Dave Campbell , May 17, 2007 |
Today was another big media for The Canadian Open 2007. We have had a few TV appearances this week, and as soon as we have video we will post them for your viewing pleasures. But in the meantime, you can check out a couple of articles that ran in today's Toronto Sun ( here) and Toronto Star ( here). Also, here is a link to the video of Harris.
Only two more sleeps!

Canadian Speedcuber, and sudden celebrity, Yannick Martin once again made an appearance on French TV today. He was on a show called Caféine, on the TQS network, and once again performed very well. The segment was over 6 minutes in length, and Yannick did a great job to keep it interesting and informative. To see the video, click here to download it (23 MB). Again, the interview is in French.

Should a non Canadian win the 3x3x3 speedsolve event, he or she will win the prize pack and current share of the prize money. The Grand Prize trip to Budapest will then be awarded to the next fastest competitor from Canada. Should the winner be unable to attend the competition in Budapest, the winner is eligible to claim the cash equivalent of the prize. |

Yannick Martin on Salut Bonjour French Canada finally gets solved Dave Campbell , May 7, 2007 |

Canadian Speedcuber Yannick Martin appeared on the French morning show, Salut Bonjour today, May 7, 2007. The interview was fairly lengthy, spanning over 5 minutes. He did an amazing job on the show, handling the pressure with a lot of grace and answering questions like a natural. CanadianCUBING congratulates him on his success. The clip of the appearance can be viewed here (20 MB). The conversation is of course in French, so if you don't speak it, we can't help you there. He solves the cube at the end of the clip.
Yannick actually traveled a great distance and spent many hours to be able to appear on this show. It was great for Quebec to get this exposure to our sport. We hope that a lot of people who saw the show will become interested in cubing. That is always the goal, to expand our numbers.
Thank you, Yannick. And great job. We look forward to having you at the competition. |
